Julian Ruffino is a pretty lucky guy. He lives in the Northern Virginia countryside and gets to review wine for a living. Not only that, but vineyards send him bottles of wine for free. He’s also got a great dog. What more could a guy want?
But when the severed head is found at a local wine festival, his luck goes decidedly downhill. There’s the head itself, which belongs to someone Julian knew. Mysterious black cars are trying to run him off the road. His daughter becomes engaged to a rodeo clown. And sexy women keep showing up in his kitchen - which doesn’t sound so bad, until he realizes that one of them might be trying to kill him. There’s also the website with the naked wine reviews and a brother who gets mad about the fact that his wife - the sister-in-law that Julian can’t stand - gets kidnapped.
Julian starts wondering if his life will ever get back to normal. But it becomes increasingly clear that there’s only one way for that to happen - and that’s by finding the murderer who severed the head and started all of this in the first place.
There’s a mysterious type of wine that no one has heard of - so he decides to start there. Even though some of the people that come into his life are not who they seem. And even though it becomes apparent that there’s someone - or an entire group - who will do anything it takes to stop him.

I thought the book generally was excellent. The major flaw I found was the manner of death of one character and it not being quite believable in some of the action scenes. If you keep in mind that you're reading fiction and grant the artistic license it should have, it was very, very good. I am somewhat familiar with the locality of the book and found it in keeping with what I know. The wine information was interesting. I had a difficult time putting my Kindle Fire down. It had very few typos and was a smooth read.Product details

Decanting the Dead Julian Ruffino Northern Virginia Wine Country Mysteries Book 1 edition by Sam Scrizzi Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The first-person narrative from the protagonist, described as a well-regarded writer of reviews for a top-notch magazine, is riddled with errors of grammar that NO writer should make and no copy editor should ignore. I was disappointed. The concept is appealing, the territory, new, the execution, flawed and heavy-handed. I was seeking a new series to be enjoyed, not avoided. Too bad. Also, your star-system implies praise, not the condemnation provoked by the descriptors.
First-time reviewer
Decanting the Dead has a good story to tell, but also has some jarring notes. The protagonist starts off as a pompous character living in Virginia's wine country. Shortly afterward, he is a 49-year-old that suddenly refers to all men as "dude." I was unable to decipher the transition. The author also has a habit of assigning racial descriptions to peripheral characters (parking attendants, chauffeurs, trash collectors) for no apparent reason. The book could have used the eye of a proofreader. Having said that, it is a great mystery populated with interesting characters.
Good book, easy reading, loved the story line and characters. Looking forward to reading more of Julian Ruffino. Thank you.
Enjoyed this book. Julian is a compelling character. Look forward to more of his stories.
The book had many really good aspects, the characters were fun and the plot amusing at times. The story flowed well except in a few places. The main character was fun and a little full of himself, he made you laugh even in the unfortunate circumstances he found himself in, this led to him being very likable. The whole setting in Virginia wine country was great.
I thought the book generally was excellent. The major flaw I found was the manner of death of one character and it not being quite believable in some of the action scenes. If you keep in mind that you're reading fiction and grant the artistic license it should have, it was very, very good.
