The Rewind Files Claire Willett Books
The Rewind Files is one of those books that once you pick up, you don't want to put back down until it's over. Willett's deft hand at world-building and knack for dropping in plot beats at just the right intervals to keep things ticking along without feeling rushed combined to draw me in right from the very start--and indeed, the action and the mystery begin so fast, within a chapter or two I was already hooked! Time travel stories can be tricky to manage plot- and world-wise, but The Rewind Files is never over-complicated and avoids almost all major time-travel-related plot holes. Plus you'll learn a lot about Watergate--in such a way that will actually make you _care_ about Watergate, even if you never have before! What makes The Rewind Files really special, though, are the characters. Narrator/protagonist Regina "Reggie" Bellows is a charming combination of dry humor, self-deprecation, razor-sharp wit, and Gryffindor-worthy courage and boldness. The characters that surround her are equally well-drawn, and her relationships to her friends and especially her family are by turns touching and heart-wrenching. Plus, Willett has a fantastic ear for dialogue--such that even passages of exposition are spiced up with plenty of funny banter.
I'd read a sequel (or sequels!) in a heartbeat--I hope there's more to come in this universe!

The Rewind Files Claire Willett Books Reviews
Bravo, Ms. Willett! Seemingly from out of nowhere comes one of the most engaging time travel books I have had the privilege of reading. There are some superficial similarities to Stephen King's fine "11/22/63" in that both are focused on an event in relatively recent American history and even more so in that both treat time itself as a character, somehow organic in the way it must be handled. The King novel is about preventing JFK's assassination while the Willett book initially seems to be about Watergate, but that is only a part of the complicated whole that Ms. Willett lays before the reader. I have always felt writing a time travel book that was internally consistent in its treatment of time travel was one of the most difficult tasks an author could undertake. "The Rewind Files" is complicated, as good time travel books should be, and it is deeply satisfying in accomplishing what it sets out to do.
The main character is a young time travel operative named Reggie, the daughter of the two best operatives to ever work for the US agency responsible for patching the "real" timeline that had been through a WWIII that devastated Washington and Beijing and killed many millions of innocent people. It is hardly a spoiler to assume that Reggie and her able cast of fellow travelers will discover an important "chronomaly" that they attempt to correct. And I will say no more about all that.
The characters are likeable, despite occasional brattiness on Reggie's part, and there are the expected Watergate names. Ms. Willett deserves enormous praise, and if there is ever a sequel I did my best to read it before it was published.
The Rewind Files is an absolute treasure. This book has everything, a delightfully witty female protagonist, fully developed characters and relationships, complete worlds both in the past and the future, and time travel. Though time travel isn’t actually possible right now, I feel Willett’s writing is as close as we can get to the real thing. She builds the worlds of both the past and the future in a way that makes you feel as if you’re actually there, you can see everything as it happens. Time travel can be a sticky situation to describe, but Willett does so beautifully and clearly, the science actually is understandable.
The protagonist Regina “Reggie” Bellows is such a refreshing and relatable character you can’t help but love her. As you take this adventure with her she is both clever and funny, as well as highly intelligent, brave, and wonderfully honest. Her relationships with the other characters, both friends and family, tug at your heartstrings in ways that make you care about all of them as much as Reggie does.
Hilarious and heart-wrenching by turns, The Rewind Files will have you howling with laughter one minute and tearing up and reaching for the Kleenex the next. I absolutely love this book and I look forward to whatever else Willett has in store for us.
